‘An excellent, happy school, where we enjoy learning’

Relationships and Health Education (RHE)

In RSE we want the children to ...

Through our RHE programme we want the children to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. It helps our children to stay healthy, safe and understand healthy relationships. We want the pupils to develop their ability and understanding of RHE.

Implementation - How Do We Deliver the RHE Curriculum?

Relationships, Health Education is based on the following:

- Discovery Education Relationships and Health Education in Years 1 to 5; in Year 6 there is a Relationships, Sex and Health Education unit.

Our RHE curriculum teaches:

A clear breadth of topics that will be covered.

This includes:

  • Healthy and Happy Friendships
  • Coping with Change
  • Similarities and Differences
  • Caring and responsibility
  • Families and Committed Relationships
  • Healthy bodies, Healthy Minds

This will look very different across the school and as the children move on to the Junior School. The programme of study starts in Year 1 and in Year 2 they start to link the RHE work to other subject areas such as Science and Maths.

What does RHE look like in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)?

Although not taught as RHE in the Early Years Foundation Stage we ensure that the children build the foundations of knowing what a happy and healthy relationship is. We ensure that the children are equipped with the skills to work and play cooperatively, form positive relationships with adults and peers and know how to respect and support their own and others’ needs as outlines in the Building Relationships Early Learning Goal. We think about how to make good friendships, how to co-operate and resolve conflicts safely and we think about how to keep ourselves and others safe. This allows us to form the foundation to what a happy, safe and secure relationship is.

What does RHE look like in Key Stage One (Year 1 and 2)?

RHE in Key Stage One is delivered through the comprehensive use of Discovery Education Health and Relationships planning, supported by the guidance from Shropshire – Respect Yourself, Eat Well and Move More document. This allows the children to build on the knowledge gained in the Early Years and develop the skills and knowledge to enhance their values, learning and behaviour to conduct a safe, happy and healthy lifestyle. It is taught alongside our interleaving PSHE curriculum that allows to children to revisit and deepen the knowledge and skills in six topics: Healthy and happy friendships, similarities and differences, caring and responsibility, families and committed relationships, healthy bodies, healthy minds, coping with change. These lessons are weaved through the curriculum to support our PSHE and Mental Health and Well being provision and are delivered in an environment where ground rules, class characters and a question box are a non-negotiable. This allows children to discuss, share and evaluate experiences and learning opportunities where they are respected and listened to.

Should you wish to view the lessons in more detail, please speak to the school who will arrange for you to view some of the materials.  If any of these are shared with you, they are still protected by copyright law.

Here are some useful documents to outline the coverage of our PSHE/RHE curriculum.
